IRD Scams - what to look out for

  • Emails / texts may be badly formatted / worded

  • Email addresses look right, but are slightly wrong
e.g. It might come from alerts@irdonline.govt.nz instead of the correct one alerts@ironline.govt.nz

  • Website address may look right, but be slightly wrong. e.g. www.ird.co.nz instead of the correct one www.ird.govt.nz

  • The scammer may demand money

  • They may ask you for passwords to your online accounts

  • The scammer may pressure you to do something quickly

  • The email, phone call or text may be threatening.

In most cases IRD would contact us before they contact you directly.  If you are ever unsure about whether a phone call or correspondence received is legitimate, please let us know and we can advise you.

Continued IRD System Updates

Inland Revenue have been undergoing further changes in their system which has resulted in some surprises for everyone.  Recently we discovered the following which has affected some clients:

  • Auto Assessments with Tax Due – some clients whose 2020 tax was automatically assessed by IRD were not advised of tax payments until the week the tax was due.  This year we will assess clients in this situation and send you a tax letter with plenty of time to make payment.

  • Income Tax paid by refund – We had arranged for some client’s 2020 tax to be paid by a refund from another tax type or another tax payer but Inland Revenue did not process the transfers so some clients have received overdue notices from IRD.  We are following up on these so you can ignore the letters you receive from Inland Revenue.

As always, if you receive any correspondence from IRD that you are unsure of, please let us know and we will look into it.
